Book Review: The Cross by Steve Cavanagh (Eddie Flynn #0.5)

Originally published in 2015, The Cross by Steve Cavanagh introduces us to conman turned lawyer Eddie Flynn and his “partner in the law”, Jack Halloran and leads into the first full-length novel in the series, The Defense (though there is no direct overlap/ link between the books and Book 1 can be read independently). Halloran and Flynn’s latest client is the wife of ex-con Chilli Hernandez, who was choked to death by an NYPD police officer in a struggle for a knife that was used to murder a man. Already financially strapped, suing the NYPD puts them in a precarious position with the NYPD but it seems that there is more to Chilli’s death than meets the eye. As the lawyers delve deeper into the case they find themselves embroiled amid an IAB investigation against the “Morgue Squad” among whom are a group of corrupt NYPD officers who collude with a professional hit man and frame innocent men for contract killings, Chilli being the latest victim who was being framed for a hit. As the case progresses, threats are made, people are murdered and chaos erupts putting Eddie, Jack and his client in danger. It's up to Eddie to get justice for his client while keeping himself, his family, and his associates safe.

At 160+ pages, The Cross by Steve Cavanagh is a fast-paced, intricately plotted, thrilling novella that packs quite the punch. Though the plot does get a bit too complicated for such a short book and therefore feels a bit rushed, I liked how the story plays out. Overall, it’s a perfect introduction to Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn Series. During my recent trip to India, I got to browsing the Amazon Kindle store and was thrilled to come across this little gem of a novella. I wish it were available here in the US Kindle store because fans of the series would surely enjoy this one.
